Types of Dental Crowns Available in Our Aurora Office
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns
PFM crowns combine the strength of a metal base with the natural appearance of porcelain. These crowns are durable and often used for back teeth where strong biting forces occur. While some metal may become visible at the gumline over time, PFM crowns offer a balance of function and aesthetics for many patients.
All-Ceramic or All-Porcelain Crowns
These crowns are highly esthetic and ideal for front teeth. They offer a natural translucency that mimics real enamel, making them a great choice for patients seeking the most cosmetic result. All-ceramic crowns are also a good option for patients with metal allergies or sensitivities.
Zirconia Crowns
Zirconia crowns are incredibly strong and resistant to wear, making them suitable for both front and back teeth. They’re milled from a solid block of zirconia and offer excellent longevity while still providing a natural tooth-colored appearance. At Oasis Dental, zirconia is often recommended for patients seeking a highly durable, metal-free option.
Evaluation and Tooth Preparation
The first step in the crown process is a comprehensive exam and X-rays to assess the tooth’s condition. If a crown is the right solution, Dr. Duong will gently prepare the tooth by removing any decay or old filling material and shaping it to accommodate the crown. This ensures a secure and comfortable fit. Impressions are then taken to create a custom crown that perfectly matches your bite and smile.
Temporary Crown Placement
While your permanent crown is being crafted by a dental lab, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it. This temporary restoration allows you to eat, speak, and smile normally while ensuring the underlying tooth stays safe from damage or sensitivity. Dr. Duong will provide care instructions for your temporary crown and schedule your final placement once your permanent crown is ready.
Final Crown Placement
At your follow-up appointment, Dr. Duong will remove the temporary crown and place your new custom crown. He’ll check the fit, shape, and color to ensure it blends naturally with your other teeth. Once you’re happy with how it looks and feels, the crown is permanently cemented in place. The result is a durable, functional restoration that allows you to chew, smile, and speak with confidence.
Post Operation:
First 24 hours: Eat soft foods and avoid anything sticky or very hard while the cement fully sets
Sensitivity: Mild hot or cold sensitivity is normal for the first 1–2 weeks
Bite check: If your bite feels high or off, contact Oasis Dental right away for a quick adjustment
Daily care: Brush and floss normally to keep your crown and surrounding teeth healthy
Longevity: With proper care, your crown can last 10–15 years or longer
